How to run under the 7 Hour Cutoff
Stephen Jackson ran the race as a sweeper in 2003, and finished in 7hrs 00mins 06 secs.
He kept some detailed splits and information on how it was done.
Even pace requires 9:20 per km for the duration. That doesn't sound too hard, strongut there are a few ups and downs between the start and finish that affect that even pacing.

Right from the start, time will be lost due to congestion down Nellies Glen. Take your time, as there is plenty of flat running to make up time before the serious up occurs after Cox's. Expect to be up to 15 minutes behind time at the bottom of Nellies after 3k (that's about 0:42hr elapsed).
By the time you reach the Gate and the Megalong Road crossing at 8k you should be making up time and therefore be no more than 3 or 4 minutes behind (1:17hr).
The next landmark is the Cox's River crossing at 15.5k. You want time in the bank by here - ideally about 10 minutes (2:13hr). Why get ahead of time? Because the next two climbs (to Mini Mini Saddle and then the big one up to the Pluviometer) will cost you time. Ideally you will walk a little bit up these hills - so that you have some puff left for running the flats and downhills.
Mini Mini Saddle is at 20k and should see you there at about 3:03hrs.
Then the Pluviometer at 26k and 4:00hrs. That gives you a couple of minutes to get your breath and legs back for the long gentle climb (with ups and downs) to Caves Rd (36k and even time 5:36hrs).
Even pace all the way down to the finish, perhaps picking up a minute or three on the long downs. Try to have a minute up your sleeve with 1k to go - no point in cutting it too fine - and then 6:59:59 at the finish. Easy.
If you stick to this timetable you will not see the 7hr Sweep from the end of Nellies until he comes up on your tail at the finish.
