Start Details 2011

  1. Race weekend actually starts at the race number pickup and as per previous years we will also have a number pickup at the The Carrington Hotel, Katoomba, on Friday 11th March 2011, the day before the race from 2pm to 8pm. We strongly encourage all runners to make the effort to come to pick up your race number, timing chip, bus tickets, Tshirts etc and ask last minute questions all in good time. If you are staying at Jenolan Caves we ask you come to Katoomba to pick up your number.
  2. The start is at the Marked Explorers Tree, a couple of km WEST of Katoomba. (If you are coming from Sydney, that means further inland, the other side of Katoomba).
  3. The start is in a very restricted area and there is NO PARKING close to the start line. Do not park on Great Western Highway - it is unsafe and may jeopardise the race. There are no places to drop runners off by private car.
  4. ALL parking is at our Park'n'ride location close to the Skyway - this is the same location as we have used in the last couple of years - we are NOT using Catalina Park as per previous years. Parking is FREE! and there will be Rural Fire Staff there all day to keep an eye to make sure vehicles are safe (although no responsibility taken if there are any issues).

  5. There are signposts and marshalls to help direct traffic to the Skyway if you are driving from Sydney but it will likely be dark and easily missed so do not depend on signage and marshalls, make sure you know the route or have looked it up.
  6. Please use the toilets at the Park'n'ride, as they are restricted at the Start.
  7. All runners and family/friends should take the shuttle buses provided from the Park'n'ride to the start, which takes about 10mins. The buses are FREE! to ALL.
  8. The shuttle bus will pick up runners/pedestrians from the corner of Parke St and Waratah St. Bus will drive south down Parke St and pick up runners waiting for the shuttle bus to take you to the start and/or park'n'ride if you don't trust your sense of direction.
  9. Parking is open from 05:30am, Shuttle buses start at 06:00am and finish approx 8am when all runners have been transported. The race starts in waves from 8am till 8:35am.
  10. If you did not pick up your number on earlier in the week or on Friday, then you can pick up your number at the registration desk at the Park'n'ride - NOT THE START - REPEAT - NO RACE NUMBERS AT THE START. Pin the number to the FRONT of your running clothes. Registration opens at 05:30am.
  11. Bags can be left at the Park'n'ride (preferred) or the start for transportation to the finish.
  12. For people staying in Katoomba, with no car, but who had picked up your race number and chip at The Carrington, then you can walk on the newly constructed pathway to the start. Please follow the footpath - on sections along the Great Western Highway you are separated from the road by a fence - under no circumstances should you try to walk next to traffic on this busy (and dark) road.
  13. The traditional Damper and Tea breakfast will be served at the start from approx 6:15am. This is FREE! Along with water and drinks.
  14. There are some toilets at the start - please use them - not the bushes. This is private land and we must respect this.
  15. Wave 1 runners - numbers from 001 to 100 start at 8am, wave 2 at 8:05am, wave 3 at 8:20am and wave 4 at 8:35am. The early wave starts at 7:00am. Do not start in the wrong wave.
  16. After the last wave has started, those family/friends that have bus tickets to Jenolan Caves - wait for further instructions. The spectator bus will leave approx 9am. The Jenolan Caves Reserves Trust usually give a free caves pass to the Nettle Cave for all people on the spectator bus - this is a 1hr self-guided tour (ie can start at any time) that is suitable for children. Normal cost $17.
  17. Those spectators that want to go back to the Park'n'ride to pick up their cars - wait for further instructions. The shuttle bus will also leave approx 9am. You do not need to pay for this.
  18. For people driving to Jenolan Caves for the finish, you need to be prepared for very long delays driving on the Jenolan Caves Rd and parking is limited and often far from the race finish and so you are encouraged to (a)take the spectator bus (b) car pool and/or (c) drive to Jenolan via the Duckmaloi Rd to by pass the delays heading into the Jenolan Valley (remember that car parking is on the Oberon side of the valley and travelling via the Duckmalloi Rd by passes the botteneck). Conjestion at Jenolan by race traffic is the main reason the race field is limited, so pleas etry to reduce number of cars travelling.
